The Moon cycles through 4 phases called quarters, in a period of 29 ½ days, called the lunation. The quarters are broadly divided into 2 periods of increase and decrease. The first half of the lunation period, from New Moon to Full Moon is a period of increase, called waxing. The second half of the lunation period, from Full Moon to New Moon is a period of decrease, called waning.
Waxing Moon
The Moon's period from New to Full is called 'waxing'. This is a time of increase. Use the waxing Moon to draw towards you, or to add expression to things already in motion.
Waning Moon
The Moon's period from Full to New is called 'waning'. This is time of decrease. Use the waning Moon to remove or banish things.
The First Quarter
The Moon's phase begins with the First Quarter at the New Moon. The Sun and Moon are now in the same zodiac degree. They are working together to pull things in the same direction. This configuration is called a conjunction. The first quarter of the waxing moon is the strongest period for attraction. Use this time to begin new actions.
Note: The first 12 hours of a New Moon are not favorable for spell work.
Second Quarter
The second quarter begins about 7 days into the lunation cycle. The Sun and Moon are now 90 degrees apart, sitting at right angles to each other. The Moon is still in the waxing phase - or the phase of increase. The second quarter is a good time to work spells to add more to something that is already in existence. For example, a second job, another child, more customers.
Third Quarter
The third quarter begins at the Full Moon. The Moon is now 14 days into the lunation cycle. The Sun and Moon are opposite each other and create a tension. This is a time of maturity and fruition. Spells that were done at the new moon will begin to show fruit now. The Full Moon's lasts about 3 days. Do magic to build and strengthen things at the full moon. This is a good time for bonding work- to strengthen relationships already in existence. This time is also a good time for devotional practices.
Once the moon has reached its height, it descends into its waning period as it travels to the New Moon. This period is good for banishing work.
Fourth Quarter
The fourth quarter begins when the Moon is halfway between the full moon and the upcoming new moon to come. The Sun and Moon are at 90 degree angles again. This is a time for disengaging work, such as letting go of bad habits, loosing weight spells, releasing emotional bonds. Spend time reflecting. Looking at what is unnecessary in your life and what you would like to attract. Journal, meditate, contemplate. Prepare for spell work to begin new things at the New Moon.
